When Tom Ford cream eyeshadow line becomes a permanent addition to his glorious beauty empire, I think I did a bit of happy dance and rushed to get my hands on it. I love a good cream eyeshadow, especially those one shade wonders, you know, the ones that you can apply all over the lid in a minute and it looks like you have spent an hour blending and blending to create a gradient and sophisticated look, aka, every lazy girl’s best friend? To me, the Tom Ford eyeshadow in Spice is definitely one of them.
And I was right, it’s a stunning bronzing color that suits most people, goes with every look, every occasion, and every season – an ultimate everyday eyeshadow. You can wear it alone, which is my preferred way with practically any eyeshadow I have – nobody has time for endless blending in the morning when you have to choose between one extra minute for makeup or sleep (always sleep, always!), or use it as a base and pack more colors to complete the look. Really, there isn’t anything negative you can say about Spice when it comes to the color, even if I have a full drawer of neutral eyeshadows, I would still have gotten it, because I’m just addicted. And I’m not alone right? I mean, you cannot never have too many neutral, right? Right!
When it comes to the formula, however, I’m really torn. On one side, it’s has a nice moussy, soft texture that goes on uber easy on the eyelid, one light swipe gives you full intensity and there is enough time to blend out. The texture itself is very dreamy, extremely soft and smooth, you totally feel it’s a luxury product to enjoy – even when I’m not applying makeup, sometimes I like to swatch it over the back of my hand, just to enjoy the texture and staring at it for few minutes to admire the color (don’t mind my weirdness). But on the other side, it’s so pigmented, too pigmented actually, so I have to be extra extra cautious when picking up the color from the pot, just a tiny bit – a dot, I would say is enough for the entire eye, if not for both eyes. And if you are in the rush in the morning? Forget about it, more often than not, you will either pick up too much color on the brush (definitely don’t recommend dip your figure into the pot for this reason), or even worse, applied too much on the eyelid, and enter the total panic mode. Also, it’s not all that long lasting either, I have oily and mono eyelids, so most of eyeshadows, eyeliners transfer easily if they are not budge proof. The Tom Ford cream color for eye lasts around 3 hours on me before it starts going wild on my lids. There have been a few times I had to clean up the mess every few hours during work, which I really hate to do.
That being that, I did find that if you layer powder eyeshadow on top of it, its longevity improves significantly and can last 8-9 hours with minimal smudge. So on the days I feel fancy and have some extra time (I say “extra time”, but really I just mean 3 minutes instead of 1 minute), I will use this as the base and layer Burberry Pale Barley on top. Have to say, I love this combo and if I’m not lazy, I would be happy to wear them every single day!
So the bottom line is… I still cannot make a final call about this cream eyeshadow. I don’t regret buying it, and won’t return it and will continue using it. However, if you are looking for an easy, simple, swipe and go kind of eyeshadow, I would say go for other options, such as the Burberry Eye Color Contour, Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour or Chanel Fresh Effect Stylo Eyeshadow, all of which have wide color selections, and are low maintenance and extremely easy to use – you can literally get a complete and long-lasting eye look with just themselves in under a minute.
